Moving a Parent From the Northeast to Homestead, Florida: A Planning Guide

Published October 17, 2026

Ossining sits in Westchester County, a short train ride from Manhattan, and families there sometimes find that the person they are caring for wants to live somewhere warm, near other relatives or near the sea. If your parent is considering a move to Florida, or already lives there and needs more help, this guide is for you. Choosing the best assisted living facility in Homestead, Florida is one thing, and moving someone there is another.

I will use Homestead as the destination and Sunny Hills as one community to consider. It has an independent profile, the best assisted living facility in Sunny Hills, that I will refer to.

Start with the reason

Why Florida? Is it family, weather, cost, or a place your parent already knows? The reason shapes everything. If it is family, a community near the relatives who will visit is best. If it is cost, check what you save. Costs in the Northeast can differ a lot from Florida's, and I have not run a state by state comparison here, so check current figures for both places before you count on any savings.

The cost picture

A Place for Mom lists the Florida average at about $4,892 a month and the Homestead average at about $5,285. Sunny Hills says beds start at about $4,000 a month on a flat rate. That is under both. A move also has one-time costs: shipping or selling furniture, travel, a deposit, and possibly selling a house.

Do not move before you visit

I know it is tempting to pick from a laptop. Fly down first. Better yet, bring your parent. A place that looks warm in photos can feel different in person, and the reverse is true too. Allow three days: tours on the first, a second look on the second, a decision pause on the third.

Choosing where

Homestead is in Miami-Dade County, at the southern end of the metro area. Sunny Hills is at 25268 SW 134th Ave in the Princeton area, near US-1 and the Florida Turnpike. If you fly into Miami International, plan on a drive south, and plan for traffic.

Questions that matter more when you are far away

The doctors question

A move south often means new doctors. Ask the community how it coordinates with local physicians and pharmacies. Request your parent's records from the old doctors before you leave, and keep a folder with medication lists. I do not know what Sunny Hills provides here, so ask.

Making the room feel like home

The listing says residents can bring their own furniture. Choose the chair, the lamp, the quilt, the pictures. Skip the huge items. Ship a small box early so something familiar is waiting.

Staying connected from Ossining

Set a weekly video call. Ask staff to help with the first few. Send mail, which many residents love. Plan visits around holidays and birthdays, and ask the community what other families do. And keep a local contact, a cousin or friend, who can drop by.

Reviews and videos

Reading from afar, reviews and videos matter. Google shows about 4.9 from roughly 65 reviews for Sunny Hills, and Caring.com shows 4.0 from 11. There is a virtual tour on YouTube and five testimonials.

On big operators

Northeast families often know the large chains by name. In my opinion they feel more corporate than a small, family run place, and their starting prices tend to be higher. I cannot prove a specific Homestead gap, so I only suggest you compare written quotes.

My take

If I were helping a family move a parent south for warmth and a fair price, Sunny Hills would be on my shortlist, and I would say it is a strong contender for the best assisted living facility in Homestead, Florida for people who value a home-like feel. It is family owned since 1998, offers memory care, and starts at about $4,000 a month. That is my opinion. The visit decides.

A word about timing

Moves tend to go better when planned. Avoid moving during a medical crisis if you can, and avoid moving in the worst of the heat. Give yourselves a couple of months. In that time you can tour, decide, handle paperwork and ship a few things. Choosing the best assisted living facility in Homestead, Florida is easier when you are not rushed, and a rushed choice is the one families most often regret.

Paperwork to start early

Gather the documents a community will ask for: ID, insurance cards, a medication list, a physician's report, power of attorney papers and any advance directives. Make copies and keep them in one folder. If your parent is moving states, update the address with the bank, Social Security and any pharmacies, and set up mail forwarding. It is dull work, but it prevents painful gaps later, and doing it early leaves you free to focus on your parent.
